Possibly moving my chocolate lab to Dongguan, China (via Hong Kong)...any advice?

Possibly moving my chocolate lab to Dongguan, China (via Hong Kong)...any advice? Where do I begin? I got quoted 5,300 by a pet relocation company and thats way too much! Can anyone recommend an airline? Does anyone know what documentation I will need? Has anyone moved a pet internationally on their own?
