My Pet Move

See. Spot. Move.

I've just recently moved from Hong Kong to Ireland on a career break here. I may go back to Hong Kong in Feb 2010 with my two small dogs, who are actually from HK and liscensed there, have AVID chips etc.The move would be to live and work there for a few years again
We got through the move back to Ireland fine and the pugs are enjoying the countryside and all went well with PETS travel scheme. However, I am well aware with any potential move with pets forward planning is the key and so am considering my return to HK now as it is a distinct possibility for the dogs and I.
My question is, given we do decide to go back to HK (we loved it!) how do we go about the process in reverse?
I'd probably travel with Lufthansa as my journey through Heathrow the last time went smoothly but was very long and by travelling through Amsterdam in the past with just one stop my journey was much shorter and this is a definite consideration for the possibility of travelling back with my jet setting doggies!
Having said all this we'll have to save hard if we do want to go back so all advice is appreciated!

It can be more difficult to get back to HK as they require pets arrive as manifest cargo (not accompanied luggage). When traveling as accompanied luggage, you can check them in with you at the counter, like you did when you took Lufthansa.

Hi there,
Thanks for your tips.
The dogs actually flew back to Ireland with me as manifest cargo, it's a requirement for the pets passport scheme in the UK and Ireland. I guess from your post HK is similar, and like my last experience a lengthy but worthwhile process as dogs did not go into quarantine here. :-)

Hi Delidee,

Perphas you should get a Pet Travel Passport if you like to travel or have the needs to travel with your dogs to and from one country to another. Me and my husband are in the final process to move our dog from US to UK based on Pet Scheme because we don't want our dog to stay at the "kennel prison" in UK for 6 months. According to our vet who has sucessfully went through the process and did all the paper work necessary to transport a Yorkie from US to UK 3 years ago, she said that UK and Australia has the toughest regulations for any pet owners to transfer our pets (dog or cat) into their country. She recommand that to get a Pet Passport would be the best way to go about traveling with your pet around the World. ;-p I am in UK now and will be going back to US in Sept 2009 to bring our Chunky (dog) back to UK in Oct... The air-ticket alone for her with British Airway (only they can/will fly Shih Tzu and Pug because of their nose... breathing problem) is already $913 one way!! I think ticket from Ireland to Hong Kong is less expensive? We are from Hong Kong too. ;-)

Hi there,

Thanks for your post, it's always interesting to hear about others experiences of travelling with pets. I hope your moving your Yorkie back goes well for you. When I moved my two pug girls a few months back I was surprised how bright they were after the 13 hour flight, they were a lot less tired than me. I have been in touch with DEFRA in the UK and since I'm actually from Ireland we have PET health certificates, the equivilant of pet passports for Ireland. So the pugs can move freely about Europe, given all vaccines are up to date and they can travel back into Hong Kong, but we must fulfill all HK rules. However DEFRA did say if in time I decided to moe back from HK again to UK/Ireland tere would b no six month wait after rabies vaccine as there was wsith ther first moeve as long ats rabies boosters are kept up to date.
I'm surprised to here BA are flying a snub nosed dog for you, maybe it was down to the length of my journey but about 6 months back they told me they would not fly my pugs because they are snub nosed from HK to Ireland. We used Cathay Pacific and they were great.
You mentioned you were from HK..great place.I'm Irish myself, planning on potentially moving back to Hong Kong..thats where I got my doggies and we love it there :-)

Hi Iwona, I don't know where you're travelling from but most animals, especially as big as a German Shepherds would be travelling as manifest cargo by airline anyway. I have no idea what the import regulations are into Vietnam, maybe do a google search and see what shows up, or see if there is an agricultural department there that could give you any information. What I've learnt from moving is that mainly it's very important that all shots are up to date, that the animal is vaccinated against rabies and that the animal is microchipped.
